"For I know the plans I have for you..." Jeremiah 29:11
Born in Orlando, FL, and raised by two loving parents Curtis and Minnie Rayam, Thomas was the youngest of six children. He learned early in life the importance of God and family. His father worked hard to provide for his children and his wife, and despite her many health issues, took care of her home and nurtured her children with the help of family and friends who cared. Thomas and his family faced many struggles, trials and tribulations that sometimes seemed to weigh them down, but through it all, Thomas never lost hope. From the struggles came strength and a desire to help others. From the trials and tribulations came perseverance and victory. One of his favorite scriptures that encouraged him through storms of life then and now is Romans 5:3-4:
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”
Without the unconditional love and support of his parents and the kindness of the many people God placed in his path to guide him throughout his life, Thomas is certain he would not have been able to face the challenges of life.
Growing up, Thomas was a star athlete at Jones High School in football and wrestling, and was also active in his High School choir. Thomas looked up to his older brothers and sister who motivated him to dream and to set goals. One of his brothers, LeNorris, was an author, motivational speaker and activists who devoted his life to caring for others before his untimely death in 1994. His life of service witnessed to Thomas and motivated him to want reach out to others. Following in the footsteps of his siblings, Thomas was also blessed with a full college scholarship.
He was heavily recruited by several schools, but in 1986, he accepted a full athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama to play football for the Crimson Tide. Three years later, while walking on campus at the U of A, he met the woman he would later marry, Elaine.
A few months after they met, Thomas was drafted by the Washington Redskins and began an exciting and blessed professional career doing what he loved, playing the game of football. His career spanned for more than a decade and included teams with both the NFL and the CFL (Canadian Football League).
Thomas, the father of 4 children, and his wife currently reside in Alabaster, AL with their three children and are active members of Kingwood Church. He enjoys his family and imparts the same unconditional love and Christian values to his children as was shown to him as a child and hopes they do the same.
Thomas has always had a heart for young adults and has spoken at many schools across the U.S. and Canada, promoting Anti-bullying campaigns, as well as Stay in School programs. He has also shared his testimony with many churches and organizations. When he and his family moved back to Alabama, Thomas knew he wanted to reach out to youth in the community. The Thomas Rayam Football Camp was one of the first community and church supported endeavors that enabled him to share the skills and lessons he has learned both in life, and in football. With his desire to do more, he had a vision of an outreach, and after much prayer and counsel, Team Rayam Outreach was born!
